中生代白亜紀の日本列島の地質環境を明らかにするうえで、石英質砂岩の研究は極めて重要である。それは大陸との直接的関係を示唆してくれるからである。幸い,山口県吉母海岸に発達する白亜紀最下部の豊西層群は本研究の貴重な資料を提供してくれるものと期待し,研究を実施した。その研究結果は次のようにまとめられる。層序学的・堆積学的研究平成7年度までに実施した山口県下関市吉母海岸における豊西層群の層序学的野外研究により,詳細な層序と岩相解析資料を得ており,それをとりまとめた。これによりオルソコ-ツァイト層の挟在層準を明確にし,堆積環境に関する基礎資料を得た。堆積岩岩石学的研究豊西層群オルソコ-ツァイト層準から既に採取されている試料に加え、さらに追加した試料を基に堆積岩岩石学的検討を行った。その結果,既に本研究者によって提唱された石英砂粒の4型分類方式(単結晶石英,単純複結晶石英,モザイク複結晶石英,片状複結晶石英)を明確に確立することが出来た。この分類方式は今後の堆積岩研究に重要な基礎付けになるものと思われる。3.アジア大陸の古生代オルソコ-ツァイト砂岩層との比較韓国の下部古生界カンブリア系壮山珪岩層とオルドビス系銅店珪岩層から産出するオルソコ-ツァイト試料の堆積岩岩石学的性状の比較検討を行い、両試料が豊西オルソコ-ツァイトと極めてよく類似していることを確認した。このことは,豊西珪質砕屑性堆積岩の起源が朝鮮半島の古生層と密接な関係を有することを示唆している。
