加速器質量分析計により、南極宗谷海岸の隆起海浜産の海棲貝化石の^<14>C年代測定をおこなった.これらのサンプルは、採集時に現地成であることを確認したものである.年代値は、オングル島とラングホブデ北部で上層の3,000〜7,000年前の完新世のグループと、下層の35,000〜46,000年前の更新世後期のグループに明確に区分された.年代値が測定限界を越えるものはなく、今後^<14>C年代に修正が施されることがあるにせよ、古い年代値を示すグループの貝化石が、約12万年前とされる最終間氷期の高海水準に生息したものとは考え難い.すなわち、最終氷期中に、南極氷床の後退とかなりの高海水準期とがあったことが、ほぼ確実となったといえる.しかし、ラングホブデ南部とその20Km南方のスカルブスネスの隆起海浜の貝化石からは4,000〜7,000年前の年代値が得られたが、完新世を越えるものはなかった.このことは、1)35,000〜46,000年前の氷床後退はラングホブデ北部までしか及ばなかったか、2)ラングホブデ南部以南は2万年前頃の最終氷期最盛期(LGM)に再拡大した氷床に再被覆され、それ以前の貝化石は除去されたことを示唆する.サンプルとして用いた貝:Laternula ellipticaは極めて脆弱な貝殻を有し、生息状況を示す群生と姿勢のまま埋没したあと、氷床荷重を受けたとすれば、確実に破砕されるはずである.現実に、これらを包含する堆積層の最上部は、35,000〜46,000年前の後の海退期に、流水の作用を受けて洗い出され、それだけで破砕された多数の貝殻片を含む砂礫層となっている.35,000〜46,000年前の年代値を示す古いグループの貝化石が、破砕されることなく保存されているということは、南極氷床は最終氷期最盛期にも、ラングホブデ北部以北までは再拡大しなかったことを示唆する.
