A Research on the Textiles imported by Dutch Vessels and the Development of International Distribution of the Merchandise in the Late Edo Period

I have concentrated my efforts on the analysis of the textile imports brought by Dutch vessels during the first half of the nineteenth century, I.e. the late Edo period, for the purpose of making clear the position of Japan in the international distribution of the merchandise at that time. So far, as the results of the present Grand-in-Aid, I have published three articles on the subject : (1) "A study of the Merchandise to Dutch Vessels Compagnies Goederen, 1807-1827" ; (2) "A Study of the Merchandise of Dutch Vessels Compagnies Goederen, 1844-1855" ; (3) "On the Textile Importation at Nagasaki in 1822." In the first and second articles, I tried to identify each item in the lists of the imported goods preserved in Japan by the invoices of the loads preserved in Holland, and made a list of quantities of the goods. In the last article, I investigated the specific catalogue of the textile pieces in the year of 1822 brought by Dutch vessels, in which, while comparing it with the related documents, I tried to clarify the actual conditions and circumstances of the foreign trade at Nagasaki in those days. We can see in the textile trade of Nagasaki a reflection of the gradual expansion of the British East Indian Company at that time. It is no doubt that the British commerce, even if it is not in direct, gave much influence on the development of the international distribution of the merchandise in Japan in those days. Further investigation should be made for making clear the effects of the loads of Dutch vessels on Japanese culture, society and economy.
