1998年のN市における集団赤痢症例を中心に、精神健康調査および施設収容法調査により心理的問題および構成要素をコード化し、心理的援助法としての戦略を導き出した。1.集団赤痢発生の条件下での現象として、不安・緊張・不眠がみられた。条件の特性には、発生源の存在/腹痛・下痢・発熱/感染拡大・易感染/自宅待機/行動制限/収入源の途絶え/経済的負担/アンケートの協力、があり、赤痢発生から終息1〜2か月後まで持続し、周囲の人の視線により脅かしがみられた。管理戦略として、発生源の原因究明と早期管理・情報提供/行政各機関の早期協働/発生源関係者の謝罪と適切な対応/一般住民の感染に対する理解/病気・治療・感染防止に関連した情報提供/感染拡大防止への協力啓発/検便陰性・陽性に関わらない補償/生活環境の調整/アンケート調査の調整/マスコミの感染と関係者に対する理解と適切な情報提供、が必要であり、これにより、対象は集団赤痢を貴重な体験として受容し、回復の可能性が高まると考えられた。2.集団隔離・行動制限の条件下での現象として、無能力・抑うつ・社会機能障害・快感消失がみられた。条件の特性として、治療・検便/行動制限や感染に関連した説明と教育/手洗いの励行/生活の規制/持参品の制限/一般住民や周囲からの隔たり/情報源の減少/連絡手段の制限/面会の制限/排泄物の管理、があり、赤痢発生から終息1〜2か月後まで持続していた。管理戦略として、隔離に関連した情報の提供と協力の啓発/病気・治療・入院生活に関する情報提供/自由に使用できる電話の確保/同施設内一般患者への感染症の理解啓発/排泄後の後始末のディスポ手袋使用と指導/リラクゼーションの配慮/面会者への感染症の理解啓発/入浴などの規制緩和/カウンセリングなどの早期導入、が必要であり、これにより、上記同様の回復プロセスが考えられた。
