今日までレオナルドの比例論についての定説は、音楽的な調和比例に基づく分数システムと考えられてきた。この考えはウィットコーワの『ヒューマニズム建築の源流』を始めとしてパノフスキーの研究以後定説化し、ペドレッティやレティなどにも支持されてきている。筆者のレオナルドの『人体権衡図』研究以前にヴィトルヴィウスの調和比例の解釈は単純な整数比の分数システムとする見方以外はもたらされていない。この研究はレオナルドの『絵画論』第一章の「パラゴーネ」(paragone)に含まれる記述と、人体比例研究の具体的素描を比較し、パラゴーネに書かれた「神聖比例」が黄金分割を意味することを目的としている。この「パラゴーネ」に本研究で検討した課題として、美しい顔とその容貌のプロポーションについて記述した部分が存在している。何故ならこれらの記述の中に'divina proportione'と記した部分が三箇所あるが、「神聖な比例」と訳されているだけで、今日までプロポーションに係る形容詞である'divina'のもつ意味が、レオナルドの人体比例研究と対照して検討されていなかった。ごく近年のファラゴの研究のように黄金分割を想定しているものも具体的比例関係は何も示していない。この研究でジゥセッペ・ファバロの検討を吟味した結果、レオナルドの数値が黄金分割を示す線形回帰数列とフィボナッチ数列が、調和比例の分数表記に使われていることが明らかになった。ヴェネチアのアカデミア美術館紙葉236に残された記述や、ウィンザー紙葉12601および『人体権衡図』の比例関係の記述がそこに使われた数学的なパラダイムから見た結果、レオナルドの比例論の形成過程において黄金分割の無理数を単純な整数として使っていることが明らかになった。
