Forestry Management and Flora in coastal areas of Hiroshima Prefecture in the Edo Period

During the Edo period in the Setonaikai region, forest harvesting has proceeded remarkably in order to supply the demand for fuel, fertilizer, and fodder.In this research project, I deciphered documents of forestry (Otateyama Otomeyama Noyama Koshibayashi cho 1726), and tried to restore old floras of rural forest in Hiroshima Prefecture.Then it turned out that personal lands (koshibayashi) were mainly covered with bamboo and other grasses, brush, and small pine. And communal lands (noyama), the less effectively managed forest areas, were severely exploited to be denuded mountains.Especially in coastal areas overcutting increased because of its convenience for shipping to consumer : a large city Hiroshima or salt work village Takehara. The floras of rural forest were tightly concerned with their conditions of traffic location and works of village.
