Anthropological studies on the regional characteristic of the Yayoi skeletal remains in the Kyusyu area

对于在九州西北部、南九州岛和北九州地区（佐贺岛）出土的弥生系遗骨，从人类学角度考察了弥生系的地域特征。得到了以下结果：测量比较结果(1)西北九州弥生系的颅脑比大陆谱系的北九州弥生系更小、更低。九州西北弥生系列的面部比例与北九州弥生系列有很大不同，九州西北弥生系列的面部比例宽而低。前者的额部和鼻部形状并不平坦。(2)南九州弥生系与西北九州弥生系的颅骨和面部比例大体相似。然而，前者表现出明显的短头畸形倾向。(3)雄鱼身高估算值，西北九州弥生系列和南九州弥生系列的平均值均小于160cm。而北九州弥生系列则超过了162平方厘米。(1)西北九州八井系在舌下管桥接、翼状耳膜孔、颧横缝痕迹、双星离子缝线痕迹的发生率显著高于北九州八井系，而眶上孔发生率显著低于西北九州八井系。除了舌下管桥接和下颌舌骨桥接外，南九州弥生系列的发病率与西北九州弥生系列大体相似。(2)西北九州弥生系和南九州弥生系的听力外生发生率高于北九州弥生系。这表明前者与后者在生活方式上有所不同。

As for the Yayoi skeletal remains excavated from the Northwestern Kyusyu, the islands of Southern Kyusyu and Northern Kyusyu area (Saga Pref.), regional characteristics on the Yayoi series were investigated anthropologically. The following results were obtained.1. Results of cmparison for measurement (1) The cranium cerebrale of the Northwestern Kyusyu Yayoi series were smaller and lower than the Northern Kyusyu Yayoi series of cntinental lineage. The face proportions of the Northwestern Kyusyu Yayoi series were quite different from those of the Northern Kyusyu Yayoi series, ihose of the Northwestern Kyusyu Yayoi were broad and low. The frontal and nasal shapes of the former were not flat. (2) The cranium serebrale and face proportions of the Southern Kyusyu Yayoi series were generally similar to those of the Northwestern Kyusyu Yayoi series. However, the former showed remarkably a tendency of brachycephaly. (3) As for the values of estimated stature of the male, mean values of the Northwestern Kyusyu Yayoi series and the Southern Kyusyu Yayoi serie werw less than 160cm. Those of the Northern Kyusyu Yayoi series were more than 162cm.2. Results of cmparison for cranial nonmetric variation (1) The Northwestern Kyusyu Yayoi series had significantly higher incidences than the Northern Kyusyu Yayoi series in hypoglossal canal bridging, pterygospinosus foramen, transverse zygomatic suture vestige, biasterionic suture vestige, but the incidences of supra-orbital foramen were significantly lower. The incidences of the Southern Kyusyu Yayoi serie were generally similar to those of the Northwestern Kyusyu Yayoi series except those in hypoglossal canal bridging and mylohyoid bridging. (2)The Northwestern Kyusyu Yayoi series and the Southern Kyusyu Yayoi serie had higher incidences than the Northern Kyusyu Yayoi series in aural exostoses. This suggests that the former differed from the latter in a way of livelihood.
