The final goal of this project is to contribute to the growth of industries of animal production, one of the main industries in the district of southern Kyushu, and the maintenance of earth environment by making pellet feed from Shochu distiller's by-product (SDB) and making it possible for the Shochu companies not to throw away the by-product into the ocean and not to burn it off. On the basis of this idea, feeding and field experiments with cattle were carried out using the pellet feed for practical objectives in the present study. In 2001, following results have been achieved from the animal experiments using formulated feeds containing SDB pellet feed (SDB-PF) and something like that made in 2000 : (1) A feeding experiment with beef cattle (Japanese black) using SDB-PF and a field experiment with beef cattle (cross) using TMR feeding system including SDB-PF, which started from 1999, has been accomplished and the results evidenced that the SDB-PF possessed many useful functions such … More as growth-stimulation, enhancement of feed efficiency, anti-infection, anti-stress, accumulation of fat in rib eye and enhancement of vitamin E content in meat. (2) In a field experiment with cross cattle, condensed solubles of SDB showed a growth-stimulating effect, when it was fed as one of the components of the complete feed prepared by TMR system. However, it did not indicate any effects for enhancing feed efficiency, although it incresased feed in take and hence it seemed to keep the rumen in good development. The complete feed prepared with the condensed solubles of SDB appeared not to easily rot and turned out to be serviceable for three days. (3) In a field experiment with suckling calves, when SDB-PF was added to synthetic milk, and condensed solubles of SDB and dried cake of SDB were added to milk replacer, diarrhea tended to occurr largely in calves given SDB. It is considered that SDB should not be fed to calves. (4) When dried cake of SDB was given to dairy cows, it seemed to slightly enhance milk production, but it did not influence milk quality and milk flavor.
