项目摘要

平成13年度は本研究の最終年度であるため、研究のまとめと発表、および今後の研究活動の視座を定めることを課題として、資料収集・研究・執筆活動を行なった。その第一目標は、平成12年に日本ギャスケル協会第11回大会において行なったシンポジウム「エリザベス・ギャスケルにおける女性の自立と職業」を検討し、シンポジウム報告として同協会論集に掲載することであった。シンポジウムにおいては「看護・介護」と女性の生きがいがテーマの一つであった。ヴィクトリア朝初期においては低次の肉体労働と考えられていた「看護・介護」が、クリミア戦争を期に社会問題化し、看護婦という、女性の近代的な職業へと成長して行く。一方、中流家庭の主婦は職業を持たず、家の中にいるのが普通であったが、家事を行なうための料理人・メイド・乳母などが必ず雇用されていたため、「主婦のしごと」は事実上空洞化していた。育児および老・病者の介護はこのような主婦に最適の「しごと」であり、美徳であった。『シルヴィアの恋人たち』において女主人公は、痴呆となった老母を介護する姿、育児に献身する姿を示して周囲に受容され、読者の好感を得る。しかしこれは現状を甘受する姿勢である。弱者介護のなかに実は相互の、もたれあいが潜んでいることについて討議が交わされ、職業にむけての教育・訓練の不足が、女性の自立に対する自信と意欲を失わせ、自立を阻害している事実が立証された。本研究クループは11年度は20世紀初頭に出現したカメラウーマン、12年度は看護・介護という「女性のしごと」について考察し、13年度には女子教育と自立を主題に研究を進めてきた。今後とも「女性の自立と職業」について考究を深めて行きたいと切望するものである。
