昨年度までの研究成果を踏まえて、本年度は、信者に対する修験者の活動の実態と、その歴史的変遷の解明に課題を設定した。まず近世期についてみると、「良覚院一件」(東北大学図書館所蔵)などの史料から、仙台藩の修験者は、その霞場において、(1)正・五・九月の守札の配付、(2)年暮の幣束の配付、(3)入仏・遷宮、(4)諸供養開眼、(5)湯殿行火注連・参詣道者先達、(6)火伏・地祭、(7)跡祈祷・寅返・火浄などを職分にしていたことが明らかになる。また同様の史料は、森毅「奥州地方の修験道史料」(『日本宗教史研究年報』6、佼成出版社)などにも紹介されており、盛岡藩や会津藩でも、修験者は霞場において同様の活動を行なっていたことが確認される。守札や幣束の配付、堂社に関する活動、参詣者の先達、火伏や地祭といった建築儀礼、跡祈祷や寅返などの葬送儀礼に関する活動など、修験者たちは、葬式自体を除く人々の生活全般に関与していたと考えられるであろう。そして、現代における修験者の活動を調査すると、現代の修験者たちは、近世期の活動内容を踏襲する形で、やはり信者の生活全般に関わる活動を行なっていることが明らかになる。無論、個々の修験者の活動を比較すれば、その内容には若干の相違もあり、また時代に伴う変化も認められる。しかし大勢としては、現代の修験者たちも上記の(1)〜(7)の活動を継続しているとみることができる。そして、その際には各寺に伝わる近世・近代期の古文書を用いて、祈祷を執行し、守札を作成しているのである。明治五年(1872)の太政官布告により修験道は廃止されたが、そうした制度上の変遷とは別に、修験者たちは近世期の活動を継続し、そして現在に至っていると捉えられる。
