1.閾上刺激の極性が視覚系の時間的加重特性に及ぼす効果について精神物理学的に検討した.中程度の強度の背景上に提示された,エネルギー総量が一定で持続時間の異なる閾上矩形波刺激間の弁別率は,刺激対における持続時間の組み合わせが等しければ,刺激が輝度増分・減分のいずれであってもほぼ等しく,臨界持続時間に差は認められなかった.このことは,増分光と減分光とで,応答する視覚系内のメカニズムは異なるものの(オン経路とオフ経路),それらのメカニズムの時間的加重特性は等しいことを示すものと解された.また同一の刺激条件において測定されたマスキング関数は,刺激の極性によりその形状は異なるものの,やはり臨界持続時間には差が認められなかった.このことは,上記の刺激弁別実験の結果を確認するとともに,刺激の知覚像のもととなっている応答が,視覚系の比較的末梢のレベルに起源を有していることを強く示唆するものである.2.持続時間とともにエネルギー量の変化する閾上刺激に対する時間的加重に,刺激の極性の及ぼす効果について精神物理学的に検討した.強度一定の増分刺激および減分刺激の持続時間の変化にともない,見かけの明るさ・暗さがどのように変化するか検討した.その結果,増・減分刺激の強度の絶対値が等しい場合,明るさ・暗さの臨界持続時間には刺激の極性による差が認められ,減分刺激の方が臨界持続時間が幾分長かった.この結果は,知覚像の明るさ・暗さが決定される視覚系の中枢のレベルにおいては,明るさの知覚に関与するオン経路よりも,暗さの知覚に与るオフ経路の方が時定数が長いことを示唆するものと解された.また,マスキング法を用いて,視覚系の末梢での応答を精神物理学的に評価し,この考察の妥当性を検証する試みについても着手したが,現在のところ完結するには至っていない.3.これまでの実験的検討において明らかとなった拘束条件に基づき,閾レベルと閾上レベルの刺激に対する視覚系の時間的加重を定量的に説明するモデルの可能性について考察をすすめた.モデルの提出までには至っておらず,この問題に関する検討は今後も継続する必要がある.
