A Study on the Theory of Language in the Mimamsa Philosophy

I visited several manuscripts libraries in India and obtained photo-copies of Kumarila's works, i.e. the Slokavarttika and the Tantravarttika, along with their commentaries. I made a list of their title, script, material, condition, number of folios etc.The present research is focused on Kumarila's theory of language in the Slokavarttika that begins with the chapter called the Sphotavada which deals with the nature of word. I have been preparing a revised edition of the Sphotavada of the Slokavrttika along with three commentaries, i.e. the Tatparyatika of Umbeka, the Kasikatika of Sucaritamisra and the Nyayaratnakara of Parthasarathimisra. Among them the Sphotavada of the Kasikatika is published for the first time and the texts of both Tatparyatika and the Nyayaratnakara are also revised based on newly found manuscripts. I will publish the revised edition of them from the publisher Punthi-Pustak, Kolkata, India which is now in press. In the meantime I published a series of Japanese translations of the Sphotavada with annotations in several academic journals. Now I am preparing a revised edition of the further portion of the Slokavarttika, i.e. the Akritvada which deals with the meaning of word.Furthermore I have been preparing the digitized picture data of the manuscripts in order to provide researchers with them in the form of CD-ROM/DVD.
