We made research on physical status and health condition of mentally retarded adults who are Institutionalized at residential care facilities or who go to welfare work activity center. Of 489 aged 19-72, 306(62. 7 percent) are male and 182(37. 3 percent) are female, males are 36.1±11.4 years old on average and females are 36.5±11.2 years old. There are 63 persons(12.9 percent) with Down syndrome in this sample.Different from the general population, whose weight, body fat(%), BMI, W/H ratio are obviously related to blood pressure, the mentally retarded indicated no such relations.Other findings are as follows :Body fat(%) of women was over 30% of the cutoff point of obesity are higher than men. However, their blood pressure was lower than that of men. We should take some peculiarity to women into consideration.(2) As for men, all indicators of obesity of the people going to the center were significantly higher than the institutionalized. However, except for W/H ratio, women indicated no such relations. While obesity of the mentally retarded might be well controlled in the facilities, that of women should be explained by some biological point of view than any environmental point of view.(3) As for women, body fat(%) and BMI of the people with Down syndrome were obviously higher than the people without Down syndrome. However, BMI of the people with Down syndrome being higher, men indicated no significant difference between the two. As for people with Down syndrome, systolic blood pressure of the men were around 110mmHg and that of women were around 90mmHg. These are especially lower than the people without Down syndrome.(4) As for men, people under 35 years indicated significantly more weight, BMl, body fat(%), and people over 35 indicated higher blood pressure. As for women, people over 35 indicated higher W/H ratio, which might worn them of abdominal fat obesity.
