Cooperative emission by two initially excite atoms in a planar microcavity is investigated quantum-mechanically. Using exact electro-magnetic mode functions extending over whole space that includes the cavity, we obtained a delay-differential equation containing relevant delay times. Numerical analysis in the strong-coupling regime revealed strong cooperative effects for small inter-atomic distances. Notably, the cooperative effects diminished for distances around the characteristic mode size of the planar microcavity. In this connection, the role of symmetric and anti-symmetric intermediate states in cooperative emission by two initially excited atoms in free space was investigated to find that both states contribute to the radiative decay and lack of either one results in prolonged decay. Preliminary experiments on observing two molecule emission under the mode defining property of a planar microcavity was performed using a Rhodamine6G dye solution as the emitting medium and a SHG-YAG laser as the pump source. Signatures of two molecule emission events were observed.
