For the chemical degradation of corrosion resistant FRP, the study was carried out for the purpose of carrying out the quantitative evaluation by monitoring on-line using optical fiber in the non-destructive inspection. To begin with, isophthalic type of unsaturated polyester resin used as a matrix resin for corrosion resistant FRP was immersed in sodium hydroxide aqueous solution, and it was observed that discoloration layer was formed and progressed in the inside, then the corrosion was clarified to the corrosive layer formation type. It was confirmed that the discoloration layer agreed with penetration layer of the alkali and the layer in which reacted the hydrolysis, that was corroded layer. Next, the manufacture of the smart material with the function of detecting the chemical structure change of was tried. As a method for monitoring such corrosion degradation, by embedding the optical fiber in which core region was exposed in the UP resin, the change of the wavelength characteris … More tic of the light which passes through in optical fiber was tried to be detected using infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR). In the first year, the FT-IR analysis was carried out on the neat resin before curing using this on-line monitoring system. The possibility of detecting degradation by the hydrolysis of the resin was found, because the change of IR peak which showed the hydrolysis of the ester linkage was observed in the resin in which sodium hydroxide aqueous solution was added. The monitoring of the cured resin in which the optical fiber was embedded in various conditions was examined. Although the change of transmitted light volume was easily obtained, the change of wavelength characteristic was recognized slightly as this result, since also the chalcogenide fiber finally which sufficiently penetrates the light of infrared region dissolves. Then, it was conducted that same experiment under nitric acid solution which nitration might occur. From the comparison of the results of change of the IR spectrum, the difference in reaction of degradation was detected. From this type of smart materials, the health monitoring of chemical structure was achieved. Less
