This study was conducted to establish non-invasive examination of normal swallowing patterns, and to clarify gastric motility changes during normal swallowing. The results were as follows :(1) To examine normal patterns of swallowing, we investigated laryngeal movement, sound associated with swallowing and temperature of nasal cavity during voluntary swallowing. Furthermore, effects of cervical position and bolus volume on these parameters were investigated in normal adults. Voluntary swallowing was triggered by onset of a red lamp. Duration of laryngeal movement and deglutition apnea were significantly elongated when subjects swallowed 20cc water compared with 10cc water. In 10 degree dorsiflexion, latencies of laryngeal movement and deglutition apnea were significantly shortened and duration of laryngeal movement was elongated compared with those in 20 degree anteflexion. From these findings, it was suggested that healthy subjects retained at elevated position of larynx and palatum m … More olle to prevent misswallowing due to large volume of bolus. Water rapidly flowed into larynx in dorsiflexion. Thus, it was further suggested that subjects shortened onset of larynx and palatum molle movement and elongated laryngeal elevation when they swallowed in dorsiflexion.(2) To clarify changes in gastric motility associated with normal swallowing, elctrogastrogram (EGG) was recorded during voluntary swallowing and swallowing reflex elicited by injection of various solution. Amplitude of EGG was transiently increased by dilation of esophagus when subjects swallowed 20cc water. Injection of 0.05% citric acid, water and 0.9% NaCl into pharynx induced transient increase of amplitude of EGG. The amplitude of EGG increased in the order of citric acid > water > NaCl. The latency of swallowing reflex was also shortened in the order of citric acid > water > NaCl. From these findings, it was suggested that gastric motility is influenced by mechanical and chemical stimulation to pharyngeal and laryngeal region. Less
