平成13年度は、米国の全米知的障害者協会(The Arc of the US)の「Sibling Support Projectきょうだい支援プロジェクト」のディレクターであるドナルド・マイヤー氏より「きょうだい支援」について研究者らが個人的に講義を受けた。具体的に教授を受けた内容は、1)障害児・慢性疾患児の(健常な)きょうだいに対する病院内(米国ワシントン州シアトル子ども病院・医療センター等)および地域でのワークショップの内容、2)1)のワークショップを運営するためのファシリテーターを育成するためのプログラム(2日間)の内容、3)親の会のシンポジウムや講演等において、障害児や慢性疾患児の(健常な)きょうだいの支援の必要性を伝えるための啓蒙内容[直面している問題(心配事・悩み事unusual concerns)と得がたい経験unusual opportunities]である。特に『「きょうだい」の年齢にあった情報提供やピアサポートの場の提供、家族内での充分なコミュニケーション、将来設計の話し合いによる不安の軽減、障害に対する捉え方』について、サービス提供者が充分に理解することが重要であることを講義のなかでドンマイヤー氏は強調した。また、平成13年は、平成12年度の結果を踏まえ、1泊2日または1日2時間の支援セッションを試みようと研究協力依頼を行ったが、協力依頼から支援セッション実施迄が短期間であったため参加者が1名となった。その対象が12年度に研究協力が得られた対象であったため、今回「1日2時間の支援セッションプログラム」を提示し、研究者1名と共に模擬セッションを行った。その結果「きょうだい支援のVTR」を視聴しながら参加者間で具体的な意見交換が可能であること、参加経験のあるきょうだいがいれば支援セッション中に調理場面を入れることが可能であることが確認された。追加内容としては、遺伝に対する質問はあるが、看護者に対する要望はとくに挙げられなかった。
