本年度は本研究の初年度であるので、服装史一般、服装に関連する教育史事実、および社会史研究方法に関す内外の文献・史料の収集を第一に重視した。第二に、服装は、「制服」の例が典型であるように、教育にとっては象徴的機能を持っている。そこで、象徴に関する哲学・思想史的考察を深めることに努めた。第三に、日本の学校制服が体操服に重要な起源をもっていると考えられるので、日本への体操導入過程および体操および軍事教練の普及過程についての実証的検証にも着手した。第四に、日本近代における学校生徒服装は、「文明化」の象徴として、また身体行動の機能性の追求の観点から、伝統的和装から洋装への転換の契機を作ったと考えられる。そこで市民革命以降のヨーロッパ近代における市民服および子ども服の成立過程を、ジェンダーによる差異を考慮しつつ、実態的に考察してきた。それらに関する外国文献およびその訳書について、さらに学習を深めて行きたい。教育と服装との関係史を、日本社会の近代化過程の中に位置づけつつ、男性・女性のそれぞれをともに視野に収めながら、総合的・実証的に検討することは、先行研究の極めて乏しいテーマであるだけに、資料の調査収集とその分析に独自の努力が要請される。初年度に当たっては、予想される広範な課題に対応しうるような文献・史料の収集およびその整理に最大のエネルギーを注いだ所以である。
