中央アジアのキルギスタンがロシア・ソビエトの政治・文化的支配から解放されて独立し、新しい政治・社会的アイデンティティを形成していく過程で、多様な文化・価値体系が変質または共存・統合されていくプロセスを、国家政策および国民意識構造の側面から検討することを目的とした。具体的には、言語、宗教、エスニシティの3つのファクターに注目し、(1)文化接触のメカニズムにおける反発と受容およびそこからの解放の過程でイスラムを基層とした社会が自らのアイデンティティをどのように再主張しようとしているのかを言語・宗教政策から検討した。また、(2)多文化社会における個人のアイデンティティ、つまり複数の文化・価値体系が重層的に並存する社会にあって諸個人がどのような帰属意識を持っているのかという問題を、宗教、血縁・地縁、エスニシティ、神話の側面から検討した。2年間の文献研究、インタビュ、現地研究機関・研究者との現地共同調査の結果、次の点が明らかとなった。キルギスタンを含む中央アジア諸国のアイデンティティが、そもそも1920年代にソビエトによって人工的に考案されたナショナリティと言語に基礎づけられたものであり、エスニックや民族という現実の社会的態様ではないこと、および1991年の独立以降における国家建設が言語とエスニシティを基礎とした政治文化の形成(とくに神話・伝説に基づいた歴史形成)に力を注いでいることが、明らかとなった。また、イスラムは宗教としてまたは文化としては人々の社会生活の基盤を形成しており何ら問題は起こっていない。ソ連邦時代からのキリスト教徒ロシア人の存在およびこれらロシア人と結婚した現地人イスラム教徒やその子供たちの存在、また彼らの社会的プレゼンスなどが錯綜した社会の断層は、ソ連邦時代からの宗派を超えた共生の原理の中に融合されている。そのため、イスラムの政治化は極力抑えられていることが明らかとなった。
