本研究員はこれまで、ガーナ共和国南部を主な調査地として、西アフリカにおける卜占と精霊祭祀に関する調査研究を行なうとともに、文献調査によって理論的な考察を深めてきた。その結果、以下のことが明らかとなった。1)サハラ以南アフリカを対象とする卜占研究の理論的潮流は、卜占の社会機能に焦点を当てた構造機能主義的研究から、個人の主体性を重視するエージェンシー論へ移行しつつある。後者の視点は構造に対する個人の戦略や意図の重要性を提起する一方、託宣のように特殊な発話や行為の様式を通して生みだされる個人の意図を超えたエージェンシーや多元的な現実構成の意味を矮小化する危険性をもつ。本研究員はガーナのエウェ民族による卜占アファ(Afa)における対話と儀礼を微視的に分析し、占師と依頼者の共同作業を通して多声的な物語と呪術的な現実の位相が構成される過程を明らかにした。2)ガーナ南部では、20世紀初頭から妖術者の捕獲に携わる精霊の社が発展した。この現象について先行研究の多くは、近代化と市場経済化に対する反応として論じてきた。しかし現在、精霊祭祀の主な役割は妖術対抗から特定民族による呪術への対処に移行している。ガーナ南部の村落における実地調査を行なった結果、本研究員は、精霊祭祀の役割の変遷はマクロな社会変化のみならず、地域社会における政治経済的な抗争点の移行、すなわち母系リネージにおける人口と労働力の再生産から、土地用益権をめぐる民族集団間の不均衡な労働生産関係への移行と連携していることを明らかにした。
