柔軟側鎖を有する剛直主鎖型ポリエステルの液晶構造の研究を通じて、偏析と液晶構造の相関を体系的に明らかにする。PBpT-Onポリエステルは3種の液晶相を形成する。高温側で発現する液晶はネマチック相であった。低温側で発現する液晶は側鎖炭素数で異なり、n=8〜12で六方柱状相、n=18で層状相であり、n=13〜16でそれらが混在することを広角X線回折法で確認した。この六方柱状相は、芳香族主鎖が蜂の巣状に偏析し、その空隙にアルキル側鎖が充填していることを明らかにした。また、六方柱状相と層状相が混在するPBpT-Onポリエステル(n=13〜16)を熱処理すると高温では六方柱状相が、低温では層状相のみが現れた。PBpT-Onポリエステルの低温側の液晶相では、アルキル側鎖を短くする、あるいは昇温することにより、芳香族主鎖の偏析構造が層状から六方柱状へと変化する。この変化をジブロック共重合体のミクロ相分離構造の組成および温度依存性と類似したものと考え、理解した。BC-nポリエステルは昇温に伴い、n=6〜12では結晶相、ネマチック液晶相、n=14〜20では、層状液晶相、ネマチック液晶相を形成する。広角X線回折で結晶および層状液晶相に観測される芳香族主鎖層の間隔と層内での隣接主鎖間距離に対応する反射がネマチック液晶状態にも確認されることから、芳香族主鎖の層構造はネマチック液晶でも維持されていることがわかった。このことは、蛍光分光法で、主鎖間の相互作用に由来する励起および蛍光スペクトルのピーク波長が結晶相、層状液晶相、ネマチック液晶相、さらには等方液体状態でも変化しないことからも示唆された。また偏光顕微鏡で観測されるネマチック液晶特有のシュリーレン光学組織に、s=±1/2の転傾のみが観測された。Bqnポリエステルで、層状に偏析した芳香族主鎖が平板状のメソゲンとなった2軸性ネマチック液晶相が発現することを明らかにした。
