项目摘要

平成16年度における研究実績は下記の通りである。本研究の対象となる9〜12世紀の対外関係史研究および仏教史に関する文献史資料・考古学的資料の収集をおこなった。本年は特に研究文献の収集に努めた。また史料収集の一環として、予定していた中国(宋)に赴いた僧侶の記録である『参天台五臺山記』の史料データベースを完成させた他、同様の史料である『渡宋記』『不可棄法師伝』についてもデータベースを作成し、インターネット上において公開した。その成果についてはhttp://www.geocities.jp/kodainissou/参照。そして上記の史資料収集・調査の成果をふまえて、研究論文3本、書評1本、他1本を公表した。また、学会報告としては、歴史学研究会大会において古代史部会報告をおこなった。全体的な視点としては、日本古代における政治的世界観が、8世紀までは「天下」観念を中心とするものであったが、9世紀以降急速に仏教的世界観である三国世界観が浸透し中世的世界観につながっていくことを論じた。また、個別の僧侶の活動としては、10世紀の入宋僧〓然が本来の目的である巡礼の他に、「日本の情報を宋朝に伝達するという役割を担っていたことについて検討し、当該期の僧侶が宗教的な位相にとどまらず、政治的にも重要な役割を果たしていたことを明らかにした。申請書に設定した当該期の仏教的世界観と対外関係の問題については、9世紀以降中国への巡礼僧の活動の活発化が三国世界観の出現・普及を促すことになる。それと連動して政治的には遣唐使の派遣が停止されるようになる過程で、情報伝達などで一定の役割を果たす巡礼僧が公的役割を付与されるようになる、という見通しを得ることができた。
