本奨励研究の2年目(平成14年4月〜平成14年3月)は、研究計画に基づき、英国(ロンドン)大英図書館で資料収集・調査を行ったほか、平成14年7月に英国・オックスフォード大学で開催された国際学会(Aram Society for Syro-Metropolitan Studies:シリア・メソポタミア研究学会)に出席し、研究発表を行った。また、11月にも、American Academy of Religionのマニ教研究セミナー年次総会(トロント・カナダ)において、研究成果の発表を行った。本研究の第1の目的は、挿し絵を横向きに配置する一群の東方キリスト教(アルメニア・シリア等)の装飾写本の存在を確認することであるが、今年は、東方キリスト教の装飾写本を大英博物館で確認し、マニ教写本と比較研究を行った。本研究の第2の目的は、マニ教・キリスト教写本の間における、レイアウト上の関係に関する論文の執筆であった。本論考に基づき、7月にAram Society for Syro-Metropolitan Studiesで、11月にもAmerican Academy of Religionで研究成果の発表を行った。発表では、主にマニ教のケースについて述べ、西アジア・メソポタミアの同種の装飾写本との関連を示した。比較資料は・8世紀から11世紀の東方キリスト教(アルメニア・シリア)装飾聖書と、10世紀から17世紀のイスラム関係装飾写本(コーラン、文法書等)である。これらの書物におけるレイアウト、テキストと図を比較検討し、挿絵の横向き配置は、8世紀から11世紀の西アジア・中央アジアでは稀な事例ではなく、イスラム関連書物では17世紀に至るまで使用されていたことを明らかにした。
