Japanese Women in Early Meiji Japan and America ; Tsuda Umeko and Alice Bacon

The results of our research project consist of three parts following below.First is the translation of "Japanese Girls and Women" by Alice Bacon into Japanese. We have accomplished half of it, from chapter 1st up to 5th which cover the range of women's whole life in early Meiji Japan. However latter parts of it concerning women's social positions and conditions have not been translated due to the shortage of time. We also made a detailed research on correspondence between Tsuda Umeko, Oyama Sutematsu and Alice Bacon and consequently found the situation of writing, publishing and criticizing of that book.Secondly, Tsuda Umeko's donation to Women's education of Meiji Japan and her life are revealed from the critical views of women s position, based on a survey of "The Attic Letters " and relevant English writings in the context of contemporary American and Japanese history.Thirdly, we have collected a large quantity of articles and descriptions about Tsuda Umeko, Oyama (Yamakawa) Stematsu and Uryu (Nagai) Shigeko through the Fujyo Sinbun newspaper that was issued in 1900 to promote the women's positions including, prostitute problem, occupation matters and higher education for women. These articles and descriptions are sure to be witnesses to her who all filled the role of highest educated women among Japanese women in 20^<th> century Japan.Our research project stepped forward along with the some kind of research in the States and Japan, studied from the critical point of view for women's history and education in the modern time, and got some fruits as well.
