平成15年度は音風景に関する研究を中心に行なった。主な対象は,北陸奥能登の輪島市に継承されている御神事太鼓である。当該の太鼓は,太鼓芸能の盛んな北陸ならではの技術と伝統を有する。音風景の点から明らかにしたことは主に以下の3点である。第1点は,音そのものの調査である。そのため,御神事太鼓および「お祭り太鼓」と呼ばれる輪島大祭での太鼓のリズム採譜を実施した。第2点は,演奏者たる御神事太鼓保存会メンバーへの聞き取りである。主な調査点は,御神事太鼓の形式的特徴と御神事太鼓に対する意識である。その結果,予想以上に,能楽に通じる表現様式や同じ輪島の御陣乗太鼓との表現の違いといった,美意識に関わる問題が重視されていることが分かった。第3点は,音風景としての御神事太鼓の位置付けである。これについては,現地調査から得られた事実を,地域的特徴との関連や現代の創作太鼓との違いから説明する方法を取った。結論的には,御神事太鼓の音には,北陸特有の気象と,輪島で盛んな伝統産業の音との関連があることが明らかになった。また現代の創作太鼓との差異は,言説ではなく,「小バイ」と呼ばれる地打ちのリズム構成という技術面に見られることが分かった。このことから,御神事太鼓が,場所性を有する音風景の具体的な形であることが明かになった。さらに報告者は,こうした音風景の問題を文化研究の枠組みで議論するために,もとは音楽概念であったが今日では文化理論の一部となり,かつ伝統的太鼓を考察する際に頻繁に持ち出されるポリフォニーという考え方に注目した。しかし報告者は,バロック期の通奏低音との類似性は無理をすれば言えなくもないが,ポリフォニーについては安易に適用することは不可能で,文化理論としての音楽概念の適用は今後の研究課題であると結論づけた。
