本研究は、曲亭馬琴の読本・合巻作品の典拠調査から作品論を目指すものである。今年度は、昨年度同様に馬琴の初期の読本作品に注目し、物語世界がどのような先行作品をふまえ、それをどのような世界として描いているのかについて考察した。まず、馬琴読本世界の中で輪廻転生や因果応報という仏教的世界観、儒教的な道徳観念を背景として主張される善悪の問題について考えてみためが、「『新累解脱物語』考」である。『新累解脱物語』は、文化四年という比較的初期の中編読本作品であるが、馬琴読本の中でも登場人物の善悪の設定が曖昧な作品と評価されてきた作品である。そこで本論では、人物の善悪の描かれ方について詳細に検討した。その結果本作品では、従来の怪異説話を利用しながら、その怪異性よりもむしろ因果応報の理が強調され、親から子へ、子から孫へと、人物が犯してきた罪の報いが受け継がれる世界を描いていること、また、珠鶏という女性の善を終始一貫して描くことにより、勧善懲悪の世界が全うされているということが明らかになった。読本作品が前代の怪異説話をどのように継承・展開させたかを示した一論である。また、「『盆石皿山記』小考」では、同じく馬琴の中編読本『盆石皿山記』における善悪・神威の問題を、典拠作品との比較から考察したものである。そこでは、本作品が、浄瑠璃『苅萱桑門筑紫〓』の世界を、殺生の罪という問題を強調しつつ取り入れていること、また、紅皿欠皿伝説に取材した幾種かの草双紙作品や民間伝承に基づきながら、継子いじめの因果応報譚を描いていること、さらに、それら登場人物の罪の消滅が、皿屋敷伝説を展開させた話に添いながら、名僧による怨霊解脱譚としてなされていることを指摘した。
