项目摘要

今年度は、年間を通じて、古代から近現代までを視野にいれ歴史のなかのローマ概念を扱った論集『幻影のローマ----伝統の継承とイメージの変容』(歴史学研究会編、青木書店刊)の編集に携わった。また、そのなかの一章「中世写本の文字と<古代ローマ>」を執筆し、ローマ帝政期の碑文書体が、カロリング期に書物の書体として利用されるようになったこと、その背景に当時の帝国理念との関連を論じた。中世写本に特徴的な装飾頭文字ばかりでなく、一見したところ普通の書体で書かれた文字にも、意味を伝える記号としてだけでなくある種の表現の意図がありうることに注意を促した。古書体学の成果を文化史的な文脈の中に位置づけるこころみであり、本研究課題の目指していた議論を展開することができた。また、10月には読書史の専門家として知られ、国際中世研究所連盟(FIDEM)の会長として欧米の中世研究のネットワークの中心となっているJ.アメス教授の東京での講演、懇談会の開催に協力し、講演の翻訳を担当した。また、懇談会では、国際中世研究所連盟の活動紹介を通じて、中世研究に関連する諸学間で連携をとり、国際的にも連携をとることの重要性や、それをいかに実現していくかについて参加した日本人研究者にも有益な示唆と刺激が与えられた。今年度の後半は、新たな研究テーマとして、中世後期の修道院著作家の「書くこと」への評価と、その教会史的背景の調査を開始した。現在も継続中ではあるが、これまでおもに扱ってきた古代末期から中世初期の研究とあわせて、研究課題であるヨーロッパ中世の写本文化と読書史について、全体的な展望をもつための端緒としたい。
