Steganography is the practice of hiding or camouflaging secret data in an innocent looking dummy container. This container may be a digital still image, audio file, or video file. A steganography method has been presented based on JPEG2000 lossy compression scheme and bit-plane complexity segmentation (BPCS) steganography. The proposed JPEG2000-BPCS steganography was implemented using JJ2000 Java software of JPEG2000 compression, with which the program module for BPCS steganography was integrated. The method covers JPEG2000 still images and Motion-JPEG2000 videos as dummy containers. In JPEG2000 compression, wavelet coefficients of an image are quantized into a bit-plane structure and therefore BPCS steganography can be applied in the wavelet domain. The proposed steganography overcomes the lack of robustness of bit-plane-based steganography methods with respect to lossy compression of dummy data ; a critical shortcoming which have hampered their deployment in a practical scenario where data is compressed before being transmitted. Additionally another video steganography method has been presented based on 3-D set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm and BPCS steganography. Note that a steganography method using lossy compressed video provides a natural way to send a large amount of secret data.
