项目摘要

The purpose of the research is to collect basic data on overseas Koreans residing in all parts of the world and construct a database to do a comparative study in this era of globalization. Each project member and assistant in charge of a research area was basically engaged in his/her own part of the research, but in response to the importance of knowing one another's research areas, the yearly joint field studies were carried out as follows.In 2003, the year that commemorates the 100^<th> anniversary of Korean immigration to the United States, we conducted fieldwork in Hawaii, the first destination of Korean overseas migration, and visited Korea to exchange views with the Overseas Korean Foundation and other Korean scholars. In 2004 was Australia, and we researched Korean towns that were formed in the suburbs of Sydney. Our attention moved to the fluidity and changes of globalizing Chinese society in the year 2005, focusing on the mutual relationship between ethnic Koreans and new immi … More grants from Korea. We also studied the residential area in Fukuoka where many Korean descendants lived. In the year 2006, we visited Korea again to continue discussions and summarized the overall research results. Based on these studies, the research results were published in Senri Ethnological Report Vol. 69 and elsewhere while each project member and assistant individually presented papers at conferences and public symposiums. Additionally, this research project is scheduled to be featured in Minpaku Teushin No. 119.As for the database, we made a list of books and papers on overseas Koreans for each area of the world and presented a general overview of the studies of overseas Koreans as a whole. With the recent increase and variety of the literature related to overseas Koreans, each project member and assistant prepared a literature review based on his/her own research. We are planning to add and revise this database continually.
