项目摘要

平安時代中期から後期にかけて、仏教が民衆の間に広まったことは、従来より指摘されている。しかし、仏教の拡大において、比叡山などで行われた「講」が大きな役割を果たしたことは、あまり注目されてこなかったように思われる。本研究では仏像の宗教的・社会的役割を解明するために、平安時代から鎌倉時代に行われた各種の講に焦点を当て、仏教儀礼の研究を行った。その結果、平安・鎌倉時代における仏像の宗教的・社会的役割がごある程度把握できたと考える。この研究を進める上で、二つの方法を採用した。一つは文献的研究である。この一年間をかけて研究分担者のホートン教授とともに、いくつかの講式(仏教儀式の時に用いられる式次第)や説話集に散見する仏像や仏教儀礼の記述をに関する解読作業をおこなった。取り上げた文献の主なものは『日本霊異記』、『法華験記』、『今昔物語集』、永観の『往生講式』などであったが、それに加えて『源氏物語』や『枕草子』に見られる仏像に関する記述や『矢田寺縁起絵巻』なども検討した。第二の方法として、平安時代・鎌倉時代の仏像を安置する寺院で行われている儀式に参加し、調査を行った。特にホートン教授は、ほぼ毎週近畿圏で行われている各種仏教儀礼に参加し、その様子を写真やビデオに納めた。また、その際には住職や一般信者に聞き取り調査も行った。特に興味深かったのは、奈良の薬師寺や京都の知恩院と清浄華院で行われる仏像の身拭い式であったが、その他にも奈良の伝香寺の有名な年中儀礼である裸地蔵の着替え式や京都の本能寺で行われる放生会にも参加することができた。
