本年度の研究成果は、京都大学・文学研究科に提出された課程博士論文『プルーストとその時代-芸術作品と土地をめぐる研究』として総合された。これは、プルーストの小説美学の柱の一つを成す<土地>という主題が、19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけての社会的・芸術的な問題系とどのような関わりを持っていたのかを問うものであり、文学の領域に留まらない広範な時代の潮流へと作家の思考を還元し、『失われた時を求めて』で描かれるプルースト的な<土地>が持つ特異性を明らかにする研究であった。<土地>という主題をめぐる時代状況を作家がどの程度まで共有し得たのかを検証するための切り口として、当時、優れて文学的なトポスであった都市ヴェネツィアに着目した。「死」の影が射す水上都市をめぐる流行や、そこに漂う「過去」への憧憬を中心とした当時の文学的な熱狂と、実体験に基づいて「ヴェネツィアの廃墟」という象徴的な挿話を描くプルーストとの距離を考察し、<土地>の記憶という主題が、どのようなかたちでエクリチュールの実践へと通じているのかを明らかにした。また、プルーストと第一次大戦との関わりをめぐってさらに分析を進め、戦争によるコンブレーの崩壊が何よりもまず、私的な記憶を喚起するはずの<モニュメント>の喪失を意味し、記憶の源泉を求めてその土地に帰還する可能性が失われたことを示す出来事であったことを指摘した。それは懐古的な「故郷回帰」を否定するプルーストの小説美学を端的に示すものなのである。このような研究を通して、作家固有の主題として掘り下げられてゆく<土地>という概念が、小説家としての道を模索していたプルーストの美学的思索と如何に密接に関わるものであったかを分析することによって、<芸術作品>の来るべき創造に向けて両者が不可分な形で交錯してゆくその過程が明らかになった。
