今年度の研究実績の一点目は、日本の地理学におけるジェンダー研究の進展を批判的に検討し、今日の国際的なジェンダー地理学の潮流に位置づけた。まず、日本の地理学に存在する性差の偏りを、学会の会員数や論文執筆数などの数量的側面から指摘し、地理学におけるジェンダー研究の背景を説明した。次に、最近の日本の地理学ではジェンダー概念が注目される一方、必ずしもその意味が的確に認識されていない問題を検討した。具体的には、ジェンダー概念が単に女性や性差に注目するものと解釈される傾向にある点、ジェンダー概念に深く関わるセクシュアリティの視点が十分に理解されていない点を明らかにした。そして、これらの問題を解消するためには、ジェンダーに関わる空間構造を「他者」の問題ではなく「自己」の身近な問題として捉えていく必要があることを導出した。二点目は、現代のたばこ広告を事例に、空間と男性の身体との関連性を検討した。男性身体は、ジェンダー化された空間の構築において大きな役割を担っていると考えられ、その具体的な諸相に注目することは有意義である。また、事例としてたばこ広告に注目する理由は、日本では喫煙が男性に典型的なジェンダー化された行為の一つであり、日本のたばこ広告が男性身体と空間の関係性を多く表象しているという特徴を持つからである。このようなたばこ広告の質的分析を実施した結果、男性身体と空間に関わる典型的な特徴として、「自然への挑戦」「非言語的な『語り』」「女性の視線の同伴」「煙の吐露」「同性身体との距離の保持」という五点が導出された。これらの特徴は,日常的な空間が男性の一定の身体所作によって構築されていることを示唆するという点で注目に値する。
