日本では鉄道は明治期以降、我々の居住環境に大きな変化をもたらし、都市成立に関して多大な役割を果たしてきた。しかし近年の駅をとりまく環境は変化し、社会的問題の一因ともなっている。またその周辺空間も「交流の場」として十分に活用されているとは言い難い。その一方で近年の再開発や、鉄道会社と行政の協力による新しい駅空間の創造といった新しい試みも行われている。これらは駅空間を単なる交通機関の分節点ではなく、人と物、人と人、人と空間の「交流の場」として位置づけていこうという試みである。本研究では、こうした日本の駅および周辺空間の実態を調査し、また海外特に欧州の優良事例と比較検討することで、現状の評価を行い、今後の住環境整備の可能性を探ることを目標としたものである。研究方法は、これまで14年間にわたり行ってきた海外都市広場調査の実績をふまえて、現地調査(測定・観察・ヒアリング等)→作図→整理・分析→類型化→考察という一連の流れに沿う形式で行った。駅機能を直接担う建物としての駅舎空間と、その周辺空間に分け空間の特徴に基づいて類型化を行った。それらの結果、日本の駅、海外駅それぞれにおいて空間構成の特徴を見いだすことができた。大きな点では、海外駅においては駅周辺空間よりも駅舎空間自体が充実、駅舎の中に豊かな交流空間を見ることができた。日本の駅では、駅舎に隣接する商業施設や駅前広場を中心とした周辺空間に交流空間を見いだそうとするものが多数あった。これらは改札の有無が大きく影響していると考えられ、単純に比較はできない。しかし、駅が単なる交通の結節点ではなく、交流の場としての可能性を有すことは示すことができた。今後、日本においては行政だけでなく民間開発業者や商店街といった様々な組織との関連の可能性を探り、都市における駅の位置づけがより明確になれば、住環境整備の手法のひとつとして駅を中心とした計画手法が確立されてゆくであろう。
