本研究のデータ収集計画の過程で、従来とは異なる角度から政党支持・内閣支持の意味につき理論的に検討する必要を感じ、集計された世論調査データの推移を実際の国政の変化と対比させつつ検討する作業を行った。1993年以来の政党の離合集散は、政党支持の測定について、いわゆる五五年体制下では必ずしも明確に意識されなかった諸問題を認識する絶好の機会を提供していると考えたからである。その成果は、後掲の「中央調査報」論文に掲載した。また、内閣支持率の推移を検討する過程で、首相・内閣評価の問題について基礎的な情報を収集する必要を感じ、本調査の質問票には小泉首相を支持する・支持しない理由についての自由回答を付け加えた。本研究のデータ収集は計画より数か月遅れたが、予定された三重県松阪市で2004年12月に行われた。2005年1月末にデータは納品され、現在データ・クリーニングを兼ねた記述的分析が行われている。初期段階で注目するべき成果としては、A・Bの分割調査票形式で行った実験において、「政治」と「政府」では、有権者の反応に興味深い差が見られたことである。即ち、「政治」に対する信頼が「政府」に対する信頼よりも若干高めに出るのみならず、「わからない・答えない」の比率は「政治」についての信頼の方が低い。また、社会福祉質問では、「財政が苦しくても」と「増税してでも」という二つの似通った言葉を使い分けたが、そこにおいても統計的に有意な差が確認できた。今後は、分割票の特性を生かして、一体どのような属性の人々が、如何なる条件で異なる反応を示しているのか検討を続ける予定である。本調査で採用した政治知識尺度を利用することで、従来は得られなかった興味深い知見が得られるものと考えている。
