THE FLOOD AND SEDIMENT DISASTERS IN KYUSHU AREA ON JULY 19 TO 20, 2003.

The occurred river flood, slope failure and debris flows due to heavy rains in Kyushu area on July 19 to 20, 2003. Especially Fukuoka City had the subway station, shopping center and many office buildings inundated on July 19 and Minamata City had 15 citizens killed debris flows on July 20. The present study has investigated the process and the causes of these disasters. The results obtained are as follows :(1) The Fukuoka flood disaster Fukuoka city is in the downstream area of the Mikasa river and Dazaifu city in the upstream area. Dazaifu City had the maximum hourly and accumulated rainfall of about 99 mm/h 315mm. In Dazaifu City there are many areas of slope failure and debris flows. The Fukuoka-city flood is due to the heavy rain in the upstream area.(2) The Minamata debris flow disaster The maximum hourly and accumulated rainfall were about 91 mm/h and 323mm in Minamata City. In this city there occured many slope failures and debris flows. The Atsumari district had the big debris flow disaster. The debris flow is found gravel-type of debris flow.
