製品開発成果におけるサプライヤー企業の特許の影響を日韓の携帯電話端末製造企業の製品開発プロセスを調査することで分析した。日本の携帯電話端末企業とサプライヤー、さらに、キャリアと称される通信企業は密接な企業間関係の中で製品開発を行なっている。よって、サプライヤーやキャリアがメーカーの製品開発スピードと製品性能の高度化に与える影響は大きいと考えられる。だが、特許と携帯電話端末メーカーの成果に関して、結論を先取りして述べると、大きな影響は与えないものと考える。なぜなら、サプライヤーが所有する特許、さらにはキャリアが所有する特許は、ある特定メーカーのために得たものではなく、特許部品、特許技術を普及させ、自社利益を獲得することを目的としているためである。取引があるサプライヤーやキャリアが特許を所有することはメーカーの競争力にとって重要であるが、特許部品や技術が普及しない限り、それらの部品や技術を低価格で得ることが難しくなるだけでなく、メーカー単独の競争力となりえない。特許を利用し、製品開発を行なうにあたりコストを下げるためには特許部品や技術の普及が必要となるのだが、そうするとメーカーとしての競争力がなくなるという矛盾が生じる。よって、自らが特許技術や部品技術を持たない限り、サプライヤーやキャリアの特許がメーカーの利益に持続的に影響を与えるとは考えがたい。メーカー自らが、技術特許や部品特許を得ることによって、自社独自の利益に結びつけることが競争優位を維持する方法となる可能性を持つ。その方法として、考えられる一つの方法は、韓国の携帯電話端末企業のように、特許を有する企業の特許を利用しつつ、その特許を持ってどう多様なニーズへ対応していくのかを考えることである。
