子どもの自己制御機能の心理的道具である、自己に向けられた発話(private speech)に関して、幼稚園の3歳児20名(3.67〜4.50歳、平均4.14、SD.209)を対象に認知的課題中の発話の観察と、教師評定による行動制御特性を測定し、両者の関連を検討することを目的とした。認知的課題として、絵カード分類課題を2試行(各5分程度)、単独試行として行い、遂行時の行動及びPSはビデオカメラ及びICレコーダーによって記録された。第2試行の課題は、練習効果による容易感を相殺するため、第1試行より困難度の高いものとした。したがって、両試行における困難感は同程度であると操作的に定義された。教師評定は、持続性、活動性、がまん、目標指向性、転導性の項目についてなされた。行動制御特性(教師評定)とprivate speechの関連としては、活動性と第2試行のprivate speech量の間にのみ有意な正の相関が示され、活動性が高いほど、発話の音声化傾向が高いことが見出された。活動性の高い幼児にとっては、単独課題場面において課題状況に対して注意を維持することは容易ではなく、注意の維持のための心理的道具として、自己に向けられた発話の増量が示されたと考えられる。また、第1試行と第2試行の成績の差と発話量の差との間の相関を検討したところ、有意な正の相関が示された。すなわち、第1試行と第2試行にかけて発話が増加した幼児では、成績も向上した。この結果もまた、private speechの注意維持機能を表すものと考えられる。
