タイ、タンザニアの事例からエイズ遺児の置かれた経済的、(教育状況などを含む)社会的、心理的状況は、従来、途上国の有する大家族制度によるサポートシステムへの依存だけでは支えきれない状況が明らかになった。遺児の養育者として大きな役割を担う祖父母の高齢化(タイでは遺児の成長ともに経済的負担も増加)、大家族、コミュニティー相互扶助システムの崩壊(タンザニア)、経済危機などが拍車をかけているようである。
