项目摘要

本研究は、奈良・平安時代の被葬者像の検討に必要な基礎資料を確保するため、以下の目標を設定した。一つは当該期の火葬人骨で鑑定の行われていない資料を集め、形質人類学専門の方の協力を得て鑑定を進めること、二つ目は地方で未報告のまま埋没している火葬墓関連遺物の資料化を進めることであった。前者については、東北地方および近畿圏から有望な火葬墓を6遺跡、約30個体分選び出し、人骨を借用、九州大学田中良之氏の協力を得て人骨鑑定を行うことができた。今回は特に二つの骨蔵器が一つの土坑に埋納されている事例、すなわち親子や兄弟、夫婦といった非常に近い関係が遺構から予測される事例を重点的に選出している。人骨の性別と年齢構成の組合せにより、当該期における夫婦墓の普及度、もしくは古墳時代的な親・子・孫といった縦の血縁原理による埋葬慣習の継続性を確認することが目的である。結果、人骨の遺存度および拾骨部位の偏りによって必ずしも明確な結論を導くことはできなかったが、概ね近畿圏では夫婦墓を想定できそうな事例が存在すること、一方で東日本では未だに縦の血縁原理による埋葬を想定しておくべきであろうという予察を得ることはできた。また、日本最北端の事例や、骨蔵器の質的優劣が混在する火葬墓群、氏族名が推定される墓群などを選び、人骨の情報との照合をはかった。結果、選定事例内では男性が良質の骨蔵器を用いる傾向は掴めたが、具体的な人物像や身体的特徴、墓群に共通する埋葬原理などを把握するまでには至らなかった。いずれも事例数を増やして検討精度を高める必要があるものの、まずは今般の成果をとりまとめて誌上発表するよう準備を進めている。二番目の目標とした未報告遺物の資料化については、灰釉陶器の骨蔵器を優先し、茨城県で1件の報告を作成、三重県では発見直後の資料に「調査指導」の形で関与させてもらい、成果の方向性を提案してきた。
