本研究の目的は、秋田県角館の武家屋敷の歴史的環境が、どのような社会的・文化的文脈から、角館のシンボルとして、さらには秋田県を代表する観光地として整備され、位置づけられるようになったのかを明らかにすることにある。平成18年度は、平成17年度に引き続き角館と秋田における観光に関する先行研究・資料の収集を行い、角館の歴史的環境の保存・修景の経緯を明らかにし、また秋田における観光地としての角館の位置づけの歴史的な変化について考察し、論文にまとめ、発表した。以下が本研究によって明らかになったことである。角館が重要な歴史的環境かつ観光地としての位置づけを獲得するうえで、1976年(昭和51年)9月の「重要伝統的建造物群保存地区」選定が重要な契機になったが、そこには、日本各地の歴史的環境が「重要伝統的建造物群保存地区」に選定された頃の、特に日本の社会的、時代的背景が存在していた。1960年代、角館のなかでは武家屋敷は「まちの自慢」とされ、また「桜の名所」とされていたが、秋田県内においても秋田を代表する観光地としての地位を確立していたわけではなかった。こうした「守るべき伝統」、観光地としての角館の位置づけは、長期間にわたって醸成されたというよりはむしろ、1970年代前半の数年間に、観光とのかかわりで形成されたものであった。まちなみという生活の場の保存には、さまざまな問題が存在しているが、角館の場合、保存の対象となる武家屋敷自体が少なかったこともあり、「保存」事業は実質的には、観光者(都会の人たち)のまなざしを考慮した、「近代化」に対するものとしての、角館の理念上の望ましいまちなみを創造する「修景」が中心になった。また生活の場であるがゆえに、観光において重要な日常/非日常の区分の維持も難しい場合があり、観光地として、伝統と「生活のなかでの保存」の呈示の仕方に問題をかかえている。
