A Study about Folk Football Games Surviving in Britain

Folk football games were investigated in 14 out of 17 British towns or villages in which they continue to survive. The games were observed and categorized by similarities and differences in players, spectators, how the games were played and rules. Also the significance of these surviving games was considered. It was found that the games played a significant role in the maintenance of local tradition and regional identity. Especially, local games committees were found to be an important factor in this maintenance through the organization of game events and associated ceremonies. Finally this study mentions the change in the quality of enjoyment between the community-based nature of traditional football games and modern commercialized sports.
