サヴォイ・オペラの娯楽性の陰に隠れた影響の一つとして、19世紀末のイギリス人観客に帝国主義的発想を身近なものにしたという点が挙げられることを立証すべく、いくつかの作品に含まれる愛国的要素とそれの受容の様態について研究し、研究発表やシンポジウムの場で公表した。結果的に、この軽歌劇の持つ影響力の広さと深さが更に明らかになった。特に、サヴォイ・オペラは今日の英国の映像や活字メディアにおいて何らかの形で引用・言及されることが多いことが分かり、現代のイギリス人の中に息づいているイングリッシュネスは、この19世紀的価値観の延長上にあるのではないかという仮説を立てることに繋がった。また、ブリティッシュネスという人工的な概念ではなく、あくまでもアングロ・サクソン的なイングリッシュネスの方に親近感を感じる人々の中に潜む人種的な問題に関する動揺が、この軽歌劇に対する根強い愛着の背後にあるのではないかという仮説も生まれ、将来の研究テーマとして、ポスト植民地主義以降の新たな国家観という問題も浮上してきた。これらのテーマに基づき、さらなる科研費補助金の対象となる基盤研究(C)の方向性が定まった。
