基礎試錐で掘削された泥質岩及び地表に露出する泥質岩から化学的に取り出したマツ属、モミ属、トウヒ属の有翼型化石花粉単体の赤外吸収スペクトルを、赤外顕微鏡を接続したフーリエ変換赤外分光光度計で測定した。ビトリナイト反射率等の他の有機熟成指標との対応から混入したと推定される異地性化石を除くと、化石花粉のメチル基、カルボキシル基、芳香族の官能基の吸光度は、続成作用の進行に伴い規則的に減少することが判明した。
