Influence of the electrolyte composition on the stability of polymeric materials for organic radical batteries (ElectroPoly)

In order to develop advanced organic radical batteries (ORBs), all components of these systems need to be carefully considered and developed. In the past years most of the research efforts on ORBs have been dedicated to the synthesis of novel active polymer materials, while the electrolyte has been only marginally considered. Nevertheless, the electrolyte represents a key component of ORBs, and it has been shown that a thoughtful selection and design of the electrolyte might significantly improve the electrochemical behavior of polymer-based electrodes. Presently, there is a lack of knowledge about the interactions occurring between the electrodes and electrolyte of ORBs, which is strongly hindering the development of these storage systems. To overcome this problem, a fundamental understanding of this interplay appears indispensable. Within the ElectroPoly project, the two PIs (Prof. Balducci and Prof. Schubert) want to address this fundamental aspect and want to gain novel insights into the impact of the electrolytes on the behavior of polymer-based electrodes via the combination of expertise in electrolytes and electrochemistry (Balducci group) as well as polymer synthesis and characterization (Schubert group). The objective of the project is the understanding of the influence of the electrolyte on the stability of modified TEMPO-based polymers in view of their use in organic radical batteries. We anticipate that the combination of electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques, which so far have not been used to investigate electrolytes of ORBs, will supply novel and precious information about this key component and its interplay with the electrode materials.
