The dynamic dispersion behavior of liquid-liquid systems in a type of stirred vessel that is frequently used as a polymerization reactor was studied using two visualization methods: tomography measurements and a real-time, fast image processing system.Firstly, using tomography measurements, the dynamic behavior was measured from the initial state, in which the two phases of a liquid-liquid system (water-oil (5, 10%)) exist in separate layers, to the final state, in which the oil phase is sufficiently dispersed in the water layer The relation between the dispersion time and the operating conditions, such as the impeller rotational speed and the concentration of the dispersion phase, was obtained based on the results measured, and the process, in which the oil phase is divided and dispersed throughout the vessel, was understood in relation to the bulk flow in the vessel.Subsequently, using the tomography measurements, it was possible to grasp the phase inversion phenomenon, from Water in … More Oil (30vol%) to Oil in Water, by suddenly varying the impeller height. Further, it was also possible to grasp the phase inversion phenomenon, from Water in Oil (50vol%) to Oil in Water, by dynamically varying the impeller rotational speed. Accordingly, it was found that the Water in Oil and Oil in Water states replace each other continuously and reversibly up to a certain point, but that the replacement becomes irreversible after that point.In parallel, using a real-time, fast image processing system, the dynamic dispersion process of monomer oil droplets was investigated, firstly, without a polymerization reaction. Subsequently, data on the dynamic change of mean droplet diameter was obtained during a polymerization reaction by dynamically measuring the droplet diameter distribution in an actual suspension polymerization field.Thus, it is desired to continue to study the dynamic behavior of liquid-liquid dispersion states in order to clarify the mechanism of the phase inversion phenomenon during a suspension polymerization reaction by making more accurate measurements.
