全身型JIAの成長障害や関節破壊(単純X線像における骨端部の不整像)はともに骨端部における軟骨内骨化不全に起因すると考えられた。ATDC5細胞株による検討結果から、IL-6は成長軟骨板における軟骨細胞の初期分化を抑制し、軟骨内骨化不全をきたすこと、および抗IL-6受容体抗体・トシリズマブ治療により軟骨内骨化が回復し、成長障害や関節炎の改善に寄与することが推察された。
