現在、聴覚障害児教育において、早期の手話使用や、手話をベースにした日本語指導の試みが広まってきている。しかし、乳幼児期における聴覚障害児の言語・認知発達過程で不明な点は多く、手話使用が日本語習得とどのように関わってくるのかも検討が必要であり、かつ親や教師は手話を用いるにしてもどのような事柄に留意して聴覚障害乳幼児と係わる必要があるのかに関する実践的資料も充分にあるとは言い難い。そこで、本研究では、乳幼児期において、手話を用いる聴覚障害児の言語・認知発達とその支援のありかたを検討することを目的とし、1つは聴覚障害乳幼児と親による共同注意コミュニケーションに関する縦断的研究、もう1つは聾学校幼稚部における聴覚障害幼児群の手話言語発達に関する縦断的研究の2点を実施した。聴覚障害乳幼児のいる家庭では、2組の母子のコミュニケーションを0歳代後半から2年間程程観察し、「共同注意の成立」と「視覚的コミュニケーションの形成」の面から聴覚障害児の共同注意行動の変化や手話言語発達過程を実態把握し、聴覚障害児と係わる親への支援のありかたを家庭訪問によって実践的な検討を行った。ろう学校幼稚部では、聴覚障害幼児が産出する手話表現の映像資料を1年半程収集し、それを手話言語学的な特徴を把握できるようプロトコル化して作成したデータベースをもとに、今回はその手話の音韻的形態と指文字の実態を分析して、手話言語発達過程の一面を明らかにするとともに親や教員が手話を読みとるための手がかりとして活用できることを検討した。本研究を通して、手話を用いる聴覚障害乳幼児の言語・認知発達過程の実態を明らかにすることは、聴覚障害乳幼児と日々係わる親や教員にとってコミュニケーションを形成する糸口を見出すための基礎資料として提供する上で有用なことであることが確認された。
