(1)フィールドワークと一次資料の分析太田と孫は2007年7-8月に、北ケニアの牧畜民レンディーレとトゥルカナを対象とした実地調査を行なった。この時期にレンディーレ社会における14年に一度の男子集団割礼(成人儀礼)がおこなわれた。この儀礼の調査をとおして、グローバリゼーションにともなう急激な社会・経済変化のなかで、人口・世帯構成や牧畜生業における労働力の調整に重要な役割をもつ年齢制度がどのように維持されているのかを明らかにすることが可能になった。また、太田は難民キャンプが牧畜トゥルカナの社会・経済・生態に与える影響に関する継続調査をおこなった。こうした実地調査から得られた一次資料の分析作業は現在も進められている。(2)研究結果と新たな展開の可能性太田と孫は生態と社会・経済との関連や、生業経済と地域経済システムの相互関係、そして通時的な変動という視点から、遊牧社会における社会変化と生活の再構築に関する総合的地域研究を試みた。その結果、人びとが不確実性を特徴とする自然環境と急激な社会環境の変化に対処しながら遊牧生活を維持できたのは、自然資源の共同利用と社会的な協力関係に支えられた高い「移動性」と、新しい経済活動を模索し生業の多角化を試みつつ、生業経済の中心に家畜を置く「柔軟性」であることが明らかになった。現在、こうした総合的地域研究の手法からアフリカやアジアの遊牧諸社会の比較研究に着手しており、遊牧社会における持続可能な開発のあり方を検討している。

(1)Analysis of primary data from July to August 2007 The period of circumcision is 14 years. As a result, human uncertainty, characteristics, natural environment, stress, social environment change, nomadic life maintenance, natural resource utilization, social cooperation, support, mobility, innovation, business diversification, business center, livestock flexibility, etc. At present, a comprehensive approach to regional studies is proposed to explore the possible development of nomadic societies in the context of comparative studies.
