本研究は、空海の宗教思想と文芸思想について、空海の著作の精読を研究の基本として、解明を進めたものである。王益鳴氏の専門は空海の文学と思想であり、特に空海の残した文学面および思想面の業績について、総合的な検討を試みた。また、日中の古典学及び古代日本における漢籍受容の研究を専門とする河野貴美子が共同して、相互補完的に研究を進め、空海研究の新たな地平を開くことを目指した。研究方法としては、空海に関する先行研究書や関連資料を収集し、研究史を整理検討すると共に、空海ゆかりの地の実地踏査結果も踏まえた上で、空海の著作を読み直した。そして、国内外の学会に積極的に参加して口頭発表を行い、また、王益鳴氏は精力的に講演を行い、研究結果の公刊を目指し、原稿執筆に取り組んだ。具体的成果として、河野貴美子は、『性霊集』「恵果和尚之碑」などについて、精密な出典考証を行い、空海の文章表現構成方法の特色等を明らかにする作業を進めた。また、空海編纂の字書『筆隷万象名義』等を手がかりに、空海当時の日本の寺院における学問の水準について、空海前後に現れた学僧の著作をも合わせ見ながら研究を進めた。また、王益鳴氏は、今年度は特に、『聾瞽指帰』と『三教指帰』にみえる空海と中国文学との関係や、空海の文学表現について、従来の日中における空海研究の成果を踏まえながらも、その問題点をも指摘する新たな知見を示した。我々の研究は、空海を思想・文学各方面に優れた才能を発揮した日本文化史上の重要人物と捉え、その壮大な軌跡を探究しようとしたものである。王益鳴氏との共同研究により、日本、中国双方における空海研究の成果と問題点を明らかにし、また日中双方の思想史、文学史を視野に入れ総合的観点から空海を捉え直した今回の研究は、古代日本の文化研究の新たな可能性を示し得るものとなった。
