日本の僧侶と尼寺の関係から、その歴史、思想を真鍋が担当、また京都と奈良、大阪に点在する尼寺の歴史・思想をローリ・ミークスがそれぞれ担当した。そのうち現存する尼門跡寺院36ヶ寺のうち平成18年度は4ヶ寺(地安寺、称名寺、霊鑑寺、宝鏡寺)を調査した。19年度、3ヶ寺(大聖寺、中宮寺、法華寺)を調査した。そして、絵画・聖教(経典、法式等).目録・工芸品・衣裳・打敷を調査・写真撮影した。そして7ヶ寺の宝物から、尼僧と男僧の儀式・法金の違い、時代性、規模、生活状態、会話状の言葉(御所ことば)の記録、伝え語りを中心に研究した。それにより、ミークスは、「女性救済に関連する問答」の実態を「菩堤心集」より調査し、平安後期(12世紀)では、旧仏教の学僧たちが女性に対して想像以上に寛容であったことを示すとし、また、女性であっても仏道修行が、入念に行われていた実態をつきとめた。さらに「菩堤心集」では、仏教界の男性中心のイデオロギーと在家者のあいだには、種々と違和感があったことを論証した。真鍋は、東国の金沢北条氏の菩提寺の金堂に伝来する文保元年(1317)の修造記述を重視して、「弥勒来迎」「壁画」が、「弥勒上生経」や「弥勒下生経」を具現した本尊「壁画」が完成した。しかしこれは表面の絵画で、裏面にも「弥勒浄土図」が描かれており、両面により、日本で随一の弥勒下生の情景が発見された。そして絵画の実証を行うため、経典と絵画化の関係、図像の礼拝の実態など北条氏と称名寺の僧侶の側の信仰の位置づけ価値感を明確にした。そして、奈良地方の尼僧が育んできた、円照寺の打敷の調査・経理も行い、京都の尼門跡寺院の違いを比較研究した。二年間で調査した資料は、86点である。
